Greater New Orleans Science & Engineering Fair is February 13-16

 

61st Annual Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair Comes to UNO February 13-16

Nearly 400 middle and high school students from the Greater New Orleans area will display the results of their scientific inquiry at the 61st Annual Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair (GNOSEF), February 13-16 at the UNO Human Performance Center. Student exhibits will be on display to the public on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. Admission is free and open to the community.

GNOSEF encourages independent student research in science, technology, engineering and math. The Fair is open to any student nominated by their middle or high school within the designated parishes. Entrants fall into two division: Junior Division, comprised of middle school students (grades 6-8) and Senior Division, comprised of high school students (grades 9-12).

More than $60,000 in cash/non-cash awards, prizes, grants and scholarships will be awarded to GNOSEF 2017 winners/teachers and schools, including a trip for four students and two teachers to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, which draws over 1,600 students from 70 countries with more than $4 million in cash awards and prizes. Selected category winners at the GNOSEF in New Orleans are also eligible to to compete for stae honors at the Louisiana Science and Engineering Fair held at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, March 20-22, 2017, with those winners going on to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair to be held May 14-19, 2017 in Los Angeles, California.

New to GNOSEF this year, Entergy Corporation is providing a $1,000 “Powering the Future” scholarship to be awarded to the female, high school senior with an outstanding promising project. The scholarship is part of a $10,000 grant Entergy made to Greater New Orleans Science & Engineering Fair, Inc.

Throughout the four-day event, students will be able to participate in social media contests featuring trivia questions and Instagram photos/video of their GNOSEF projects and experiences, making them eligible to win a variety of prizes.

“This annual gathering of curious students and dedicated STEM teachers serves as an educational platform for creating a brighter future for everyone in our community,” said Annette Oertling, Ph.D., GNOSEF Fair Director. “As we have for the past 61 years, we are committed to ensuring that students continue to pursue STEM careers, and to promoting collaboration and interaction between are students, scientists and engineers.”

Presented by the Greater New Orleans Science FAir Inc., H. Britton Sanderford, the Patrick F. Taylor Foundation and Tulane University in partnership with Core Element, University of New Orleans, Women for a Better Louisiana and Entergy Corporation, the GNOSEF encourages independent student research in science, technology, engineering and math.
